Safety & Ethics in the Field

At Colorado Foraging Company, safety and ecological responsibility are non-negotiable. Every tour, every harvest, and every lesson we teach is grounded in a deep respect for the land, the fungi, and the people who walk with us.

The Golden Rules of Safe Foraging

Never eat anything you cannot identify with 100% certainty. This is the foundational rule of foraging. When in doubt, leave it out. Even experienced foragers pass on specimens they aren't fully confident about.

• Always cross-reference multiple identification features: cap, gills, spore print, stem, smell, habitat, and season.
• Use multiple field guides and consult an expert before consuming any wild food.
• Be especially cautious with look-alikes — many toxic species closely resemble edible ones.
• Never forage alone as a beginner.

Ethical Wildcrafting

Foraging is a privilege, not a right. We are guests in these ecosystems and have a responsibility to leave them healthier than we found them.

• Harvest no more than 10–20% of any given patch to allow regeneration.
• Use a mesh bag or basket to allow spore dispersal as you walk.
• Avoid trampling vegetation and stay on established trails where possible.
• Never harvest from protected areas, private land without permission, or ecologically sensitive zones.
• Leave the mycelium intact — cut mushrooms at the base rather than pulling them up by the roots.

Leave No Trace

We follow and teach all seven Leave No Trace principles on every outing. This means packing out everything we pack in, minimizing our impact on soil and plant life, and treating wildlife with respectful distance.

Know Before You Go

Colorado's terrain is beautiful and unforgiving. Before every outing, ensure you are prepared:

• Dress in layers — mountain weather changes rapidly.
• Carry water, snacks, a first aid kit, and a charged phone.
• Share your itinerary with someone not on the trip.
• Know the signs of altitude sickness if you are new to elevation.
